Saints Peter and Paul High School Participates in Poetry Out Loud

December 29, 2008, Easton, MD -- Students at Saints Peter and Paul High School recently participated in Poetry Out Loud – a national recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation together with state art agencies.

At Saints Peter and Paul High School classroom competitions were held in November in which the students memorized and recited one poem.  In December each classroom winner memorized and recited two poems for the school competition.  English teachers Barbara Biddle, Tim Linck, and Christine Valeo judged participants.  First place winner Lizzie Sughrue will advance to the state competition on February 21, where she will memorize and recite three poems. National Finals will take place in Washington, DC, on April 28, 2009.  Last year, over 200,000 students competed.

This exciting program not only encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance but helps them master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.  For more information about Poetry Out Loud visit www.poetryoutloud.org.
