Saints Peter and Paul High School Mission Trip

August 26, 2009, Easton, MD -- Twenty-five Saints Peter and Paul High School students traveled to Gallup, New Mexico, in late June where they spent eight days working in the community.  One group of students worked at a food pantry helping to reorganize supplies and clean up around the outside of the building.  Others worked at a nursing home with the Little Sisters of the Poor where they cleaned up and painted some metal chairs for the residents and painted a wall surrounding an outside courtyard.  They also created a peace path for residents and their families to enjoy.  Another group worked with Care 66 - an organization that works to reduce homelessness in the area.  They painted and cleaned a homeless shelter, cleared a half-acre lot where a shelter for veterans is slated to be built, and put together several armoires to hold residents’ clothing and personal items.

The trip was part of the school’s Mission Team program which focuses on service to others.  This is the 7th year that the Mission Team has traveled to different parts of the country helping communities in need.  Last year the group went to Detroit, Michigan.  Next year’s trip will be to Appalachian Mountains.  Students participating this year were Logan Charest, Cody Clough, Logan Coursey, Brian Delaney, Mallory Drummond, Sheridon Duncan, Jamie Ehrler, Mary Gellen, Jed Heikes, Casey Hiers, Meghan Higley, Brendan Kelly, Rosie Lewis, Hillary Marshall, Kelsey Ross, Alex Schmitt, Alex Spiegel, Erica Stafford, Micah Steinmiller, Ben Sturmer, Erin Turner, Erich Wagenblatt, Madison Ward, Erica Wiles, and Abbie Zimmerman.  Chaperones were John Gellen, Gina Hovland, Patricia Lewis, Rick Wagenblatt, and Penny Zimmerman.
