Mission Team Travels to Detroit - June 2008
Nineteen Saints Peter and Paul High School students traveled to Detroit in late June where they spent eight days helping clean out and repair
an abandoned school building, which will be used as a community center for homeless children in the Detroit area. The students also helped with sorting and minor repairs and painting at St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store, which serves the needy in Detroit.
Detroit is considered one of the poorest communities in the United States with less than 50 percent of eligible youths graduating from high school, according to Saints Peter and Paul Theology teacher Gina Hovland. The trip was part of the school’s Mission Team program focusing on community service. The group of nineteen students was organized and chaperoned by Mrs. Hovland, parents Andrea Kuhn and Joe Schettini, and alumna Jill Schettini '97. Two vans for the trip were generously provided by Koons Toyota and Norris Ford.
