Local Seniors Participate in Maryland Capitol Forum
May 18, 2009, Easton, MD -- Seniors in Steven Brohawn’s Honors United States Government class at Saints Peter and Paul High School recently participated in the 10th Annual Capitol Forum on America’s Future. The program, sponsored by the Maryland Center for Civic Education, is an examination of five foreign policy topics (terrorism, trade, environment, nuclear weapons proliferation, and immigration) using curriculum developed by the Choices program at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University.
After examining the issues, students discussed possible policy options for the United States, and developed a class statement and poster as a visual expression of the written statement. The program culminated with a meeting in Annapolis with over 100 students from participating high schools. Eight seniors represented Saints Peter and Paul High School including Alyssa Beskid, Adam Goertemiller, Sutherland Goodman, Sebastian Kramer, Micah Steinmiller, Leo Wanex, Molly Weisman, and Kacee Windsor. These students participated in group discussions on the five topics and deliberated policy options.
Upon return to the classroom the students made presentations to their classmates in U.S. Government classes and all students voted in an online ballot. The statewide and national results of the ballot will be completed in June and distributed to state elected officials and federal legislators.
